Found in Avignon, and originally from the French Alps, these hall chairs carry a tall carved back pierced at its center, a shaped solid seat, and four barley-twist legs spiralling to the floor. A hall chair was always left as bare carved wood without a scrap of upholstery, because no one was meant to linger in it, and a pierced and carved back like this one often once framed a family crest.
