Jaw Dropper
Grand Charcuterie Board
France, 20th Century

Behold, the grandest cheese board of them all. Originally crafted as a lid for a marmite or chaudron, large wide-mouthed pots once used in rural French kitchens for boiling laundry, preserving fruit, or simmering stews for a crowd, this piece is made from two hefty planks pegged and shaped by hand. Sylvie leans hers against the wall when not in use, but come aperitif hour, it becomes the main event, covered in cheese, figs, and torn hunks of bread.
