For three hundred years the weavers of Aubusson made tapestries for the great houses of France, and this is one of theirs, a fragment of a hunt with the goddess Diana at its center. Woven in the 17th century and taken from a château near Le Mans, it shows Diana the huntress in pale drapery beside her horse, a bow in her hand, set in a wooded landscape inside a border of flowers. Diana was the goddess of the hunt and the moon, and a tapestry this old is rare to find at all, its colors softened and its threads worn thin in the way only three and a half centuries can manage. Sylvie hangs it alone on a pale wall, where nothing competes with a piece that has hung in grand rooms since the 1600s.
Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
Notes from Sylvie:
Dear collector, this piece may show sun-faded color and a few loose threads. It's all part of its age and character, just the way we like it. There is beautiful and careful hand stitching. The back is lined with muslin and has four small metal rings for hanging. There is also some tearing in the tapestry fabric from years of use.
