French Rush Stool

Rush seats are woven from twisted marsh reeds, the same country craft that seated kitchen chairs for centuries, soft to sit on but tough enough to last. Found in Normandy and dating to the 20th century, it is a tall stool with a square woven rush seat on four round legs, braced by double rungs. Rush was cut green from the riverbank and twisted into cord, then worked over the frame in a spiral that only tightens as it dries. Sylvie pulls it up to a kitchen counter, or stands a trailing plant on it in a corner.
