Found in Avignon and originally from a store in Normandy, this early 20th-century French shop counter was the working surface of a small grocer's épicerie. The counter is two-sided, with a kneehole in the middle where the shopkeeper stood and drawers on each side for cash, receipts, and small goods. The metal shelving on top is built into the counter, three wooden shelves held up by cast iron uprights, the display where the shopkeeper kept jars of preserves, loaves of bread, and wheels of Camembert from down the road. The counter has been raised to kitchen counter height in its second life. Sylvie places it in a kitchen as the central island, with the metal shelves loaded with bowls of fruit, jars of olive oil, and a basket of eggs.
