Some objects were made to work and turned beautiful by accident. Found in Béziers, the teapot has a round cream-glazed body painted in loose cobalt foliage, a domed lid, a short spout, and a single looped handle. Before factory dyes existed, the blue came from raw cobalt the Andalusian potters hauled over the Sierra Nevada by mule from Almería, and because the mineral was never pure, no two pots were ever painted quite the same shade. Sylvie loves it out on the kitchen table on a slow morning, lid off and steam rising while the bread is still warm.
