Antique French Alsace Jug

France, 19th Century

Select Size

$125

This Alsace salt-glazed ceramic jug has us swooning. This late 19th-century beauty embodies Alsace's rich French-German heritage. The region's pottery tradition dates back to the 16th century, with Betschdorf becoming a renowned center for salt-glazed stoneware by the 1800s. Local potters perfected the art of throwing salt into the kiln, creating the distinctive gray glaze and pebbled texture. The jug features hand-painted blue motifs, making each piece unique. Once a farmhouse staple for cooling wine, cider, or water, these jugs were prized for their durability and ability to keep liquids cool. Now this piece is poised for a new chapter. Use it as a striking vase or let it stand proud on its own.
