Out to the garden empty in the morning and back by noon heavy with whatever was ripe, a basket like this earned its keep in the growing season. Found in Belgium and dating to the early 20th century, each basket was woven entirely by hand, with a thick rim and looped handles for carrying, and no two are quite the same. Baskets like these did the work of the harvest, carried out to the fields and orchards to bring in the fruit, the flowers, and whatever the garden gave. Sylvie fills one with cut flowers and stands it by the door, the others stacked and waiting in the corner.
