Rare 19th c. Kitchen Table
Belgium, 19th Century$5,495
Spain, 18th Century
$3,295
The plates stood here on show, for two hundred years and more. Found in Béziers but made in Catalonia and dating to the 18th century, this rare kitchen dresser rises in one tall piece, an open plate rack with scalloped, slatted shelves above a pair of paneled cupboard doors, the whole gone nearly black with age. The open rack was where a Catalan household stood its plates upright on display, scalloped and slatted so the china could be seen and reached, the proud face of a country kitchen, while the cupboard below kept the rest out of sight. Sylvie would stand it in a kitchen or dining room, plates and bowls lined up on the open rack the way they always were, everything else behind the doors below.
Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
Notes from Sylvie:
Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The dark wood cupboard has a slight wobble, some unevenness to the shelves and top, and small splits throughout. A section of wood is missing above the lower doors, with some exposed brad nails inside. The back is dark, raw wood.
