This is one Sylvie didn’t overthink. Found in Avignon and dating to around 1890, this still life sits firmly in the tradition of late 19th century European studio painting, where florals were arranged not just for beauty but to study light, color, and the fleeting nature of what was in front of you. The composition is full but deliberate - roses, mimosa, and darker foliage gathered low across the table, set against a deep background that lets the lighter tones come forward. You can see the hand in it, especially in the looser edges and the way certain flowers are worked more heavily than others. Sylvie loves it hung somewhere you pass often - above a table, near a doorway to remind you that life is beautiful.
