Turns out, the French had a better system for keeping bugs off their cheese. This 1930s fromage safe from Carpentras was built with a simple wooden frame and metal mesh sides that allow air to circulate while keeping curious flies away from whatever’s inside. Originally used in fromageries to protect wheels of cheese as they rested, it’s a wonderfully practical bit of kitchen history. Sylvie uses hers for alfresco dining with her closest friends, stocked with cheese, fruit, and a bottle that’s already been opened.
