A bookcase built on a grand scale, the sort that could anchor an entire room. Found in Béziers, this early 20th century painted wood bookcase stands on long legs, a form commonly used in French interiors so furniture could sit lightly against the wall while leaving the floor visible and easy to clean, especially in libraries, studies, and large provincial homes. The many open compartments were designed for organizing books, ledgers, and collected objects, turning storage into display. It retains its original painted finish with layered tones of brown along the sides, a lighter painted back, and a softly worn frame with hints of warm gilt. Sylvie loves it filled with books, ceramics, and a few unexpected pieces so the shelves feel collected rather than staged.
