Once used in the vineyards of Portugal during the 19th century, these handwoven grape baskets carried the harvest that would become the wines of the Douro and beyond. Their thick oak-slat weave and sturdy double handles were built to withstand the weight of full grape loads, season after season, giving them the durability you see today. The remnants of painted markings along the sides weren’t decorative - vineyard workers marked their baskets so harvest loads could be identified and weighed, as pickers were paid by the quantity they brought in. The marks, discolorations, and old repairs are reminders of long days in the fields, when baskets like these were stacked high on carts and carried through narrow lanes to village presses. Sylvie loves them holding rolled linens, firewood, or standing tall as the most storied laundry baskets you’ll ever own. Several available, each with its own charm.
