You read that right, 18th century! Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, this French desk was made from solid chestnut, the wood that was used across rural France for furniture meant to last generations because chestnut is light and durable. The single deep drawer is carved on the front with a pair of diamond-shaped lozenges, a Louis XIII motif that stayed in use in the French countryside long after it had gone out of fashion in Paris. The chestnut has darkened from its original honey color to a deep walnut tone over two and a half centuries of polishing, and the iron lock plate and small wooden knob on the drawer are original. Sylvie places it against a wall in an entryway with a single lamp, a stack of books, and a bowl for keys.
