Found in Avignon, this 19th-century cupboard came down from the Alps, where long winters built furniture tall, plain, and made to hold a season's worth of food. Four doors swing on hand-forged iron hinges with shaped strap fronts and close with small iron latches; below them an open shelf runs the full width of the piece for the things kept within reach. Cupboards built on this tall-over-open plan were the storage of a mountain kitchen, the doors shut against the cold and the shelf below holding the bread and the bottles on their way to the table. Sylvie sets it in a dining room stealing all the attention.
