Found in Avignon and originally from the French Alps, this petite three-legged chair was made in the 1930s for a farmhouse kitchen. The seat is round and carved with concentric circles, and the legs, spindles, and small curved back were all turned by hand in the bobbin style. Three legs instead of four was practical in old houses where the stone floors ran uneven, and a chair this low was meant to be sat in close to the hearth. The stretchers between the legs are worn smooth where feet rested on them through long winters. Sylvie pulls it up to a wood-burning stove with a basket of kindling beside it, or sets it at the end of a hallway with a pair of boots underneath.
