Rare Lorraine Chair with Drawer

France, 19th Century

Antique

One-Of-A-Kind

Sylvie Favorite

Discovered in Avignon, this 19th-century Lorraine chair is a rare form of the regional type, with a small drawer built into the seat for the things a working life needed close at hand. The open back with its scalloped top rail is the Lorraine signature, the country chair tradition of the northeast where village joiners worked in oak for generations. Lorraine sits at the border of France and Germany, a region that changed hands between the two countries four times between 1871 and 1944. Country furniture made there shows both inheritances: the French in the line of the top rail, the Germanic in the weight and joinery of the frame. Sylvie places it next to a small writing desk with the drawer holding pencils, postcards, and the things she means to send.

Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
