Uncovered in Montpellier, these 20th-century French rush chairs were made in the tradition of mid-century Alpine modernism, the wood-and-rush design language that Charlotte Perriand brought to the French Alps when she designed the Les Arcs ski resort in the 1960s. The frame is light wood with the simple architectural lines of the period, and the rush seat and back rail were woven by hand. This is one of six chairs from the same set, each sold separately. The design philosophy was minimal and honest: a chair made from the wood and rush of the mountains it furnished, nothing more. Sylvie places them around a long table for a dinner that runs late, with the wine still going when everyone has stopped eating.
