Found in Montpellier and originally from Catalonia, this Spanish barley twist table was made in the 18th century from solid walnut, with deeply twisted legs that were each hand-turned on a simple lathe. The form is called a Solomonic column, a Baroque shape that became one of the signatures of Spanish and French furniture in the 1600s and 1700s. The scalloped apron is decorated with three small drop finials in the Iberian tradition, and the wavy X-stretcher meets at a turned finial that anchors the whole base. The single drawer still slides on its original wooden runners, and the small turned knob is the one the table was made with. Sylvie places it under a window as a small writing desk, with a stack of books to one side, a single lamp, and a chair pulled up close.
