Found near Montpellier and originally from a farm outside Biarritz, this 19th-century French farm table was built for a working kitchen. It's a true two-sided table, with three drawers on each long side and six in all, so it could be worked from either edge with the cook on one side and the family on the other. The legs are square and tapered, the aprons softly scalloped at the corners, and the drawers still hold their original turned wooden knobs. A table like this was the centre of farmhouse life, where bread was kneaded, meals were eaten, accounts were kept, and children did whatever they were told to sit still and do. Sylvie sets it in a kitchen with a bench on one side, a pot of flowers from the garden, and room enough for everyone who turns up.
