For most of its life this was a workbench, standing in the middle of a French kitchen or workshop where the real work of the day got done. Found in Uzès, it dates to the 19th century and has been fully restored, a long top over six thick legs braced by a central stretcher, with two deep drawers and their original iron pulls. Tables like this were built heavy and freestanding so they could be worked from every side, the surface taking whatever was chopped, rolled, or hammered on it over the decades. Sylvie stands it in the middle of the kitchen as an island, the drawers holding the everyday tools and the top given back to the same steady work it was made for.
