Somewhere out in the French countryside a traveler crosses a bridge at dusk, pausing where the path meets an old farm, and the painter kept him small enough that you almost miss him. Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, this 19th-century oil is painted in warm greens and browns, set in a giltwood and dark wood frame worn at the corners. The round tower behind him is a pigeonnier, the dovecote that stood on French farms for centuries, where the right to keep pigeons was once a privilege reserved for the landowner and the size of the tower announced how much land he held. Sylvie hangs it low over a desk, close enough to catch the small figure on the bridge each time she looks up.
