In the cellars of a French winery, the tables took a beating that ordinary furniture never would, built to hold the full barrels while the wine did its slow work. Found in Avignon, this work table dates to the 19th century, a slab top scarred and darkened from a lifetime of use, standing on four squared legs pegged and bolted with chunky iron hardware. Tables like this were made low and immovable on purpose, the heavy work of shifting and resting barrels done on a surface that would never fail. Sylvie stands it in an entry with a stack of books and a few cut roses on top, the battered surface set against something soft.
