In the gardens of the French countryside, terracotta was the everyday material for anything that grew in a pot, easy to make, easy to replace, and better looking the longer it stayed outside. Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, this small terracotta pot dates to the 20th century, a footed round shape with a moulded band around the body, once painted white and now worn back to the clay in wide patches. Terracotta breathes in a way glazed pots do not, letting water and air move through the walls, which is why gardeners have reached for it for centuries. Sylvie fills it with whatever she cut that morning and stands it on the kitchen table.
