Long and low along the wall, this is the piece a French dining room was built around, holding the linens and the good china and everything a meal was carried out from. Found in Béziers, this painted buffet comes from the Auvergne and dates to the 19th century, four arched and paneled doors across the front, the whole thing wearing an old grey-blue paint worn back to bare wood along the edges. The Auvergne is deep rural France, its furniture made from solid local wood and painted rather than polished, the color kept up over the years with whatever was to hand. Sylvie lines the top with framed paintings and a pair of candles and keeps the long cupboards below for the linens and the platters that only come out when there are people to feed.
