Chairs like this came down from the mountain villages of the Alps, made from solid boards by someone who worked wood through the long winters. Found in Montpellier, this one dates to the 1930s, a tall plank back cut with a heart at the top rising from a shaped seat, the whole thing built on trestle legs braced low by a single stretcher. The heart was the carver's one flourish, a motif that turns up all through Alpine folk furniture, cut by hand into a piece otherwise made for pure use. Sylvie stands one against a wall on its own, the kind of chair that reads as much as sculpture as seat. Three available, sold individually.
