Low and solid on a trestle base, this is the coffee table version of the long refectory tables French kitchens were built around for centuries. Found in Montpellier, it dates to the 20th century, a thick rectangular top on two shaped trestle feet joined by a single stretcher, the wood stripped back to a pale honey. The trestle form is one of the oldest ways to build a table, the top resting on the base and pegged through the stretcher so it could be taken apart and moved when it needed to be. Sylvie sets it in front of the sofa with a stack of books and a bowl of whatever fruit is ripe, low enough to put your feet up beside.
