Oil and vinegar have stood side by side on the French table for as long as there has been a salad to dress, poured at the last minute and never measured. Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, the pair dates to the 1950s, two square cruets glazed in a blue and white check, one marked Huile and the other Vinaigre. The lettering and the gingham pattern point to mid-century French country wares, made plain and legible so anyone in the kitchen could reach for the right one without looking twice. Sylvie keeps them out beside the stove where they were meant to live, full and within reach, sold together as the pair they have always been.
