Long before it held flowers and fruit, this top was a carpenter's workbench, cut and clamped and worked on day after day. Found in Montpellier and dating to the 20th century, it stands long on square pegged legs, a thick plank top over a slatted shelf built to hold the heavy things below. A workbench was built at exactly the height you stand to work, which is why it lands so naturally as a kitchen island, made from the start to be used on your feet. Sylvie sets it in the middle of a kitchen, the shelf below for baskets, boards, and copper, the long top for the day's work.
