Pots à Lait

Morning in a French café had its own small ceremony, the coffee poured from one little pot and the hot milk from another. Found in the countryside of Auvergne, each is white glazed with a pinched spout and a looped handle, offered in four sizes from a small cream jug up to a good-sized milk pot. The French call them pots à lait and pots à crème, the milk and cream jugs that came two and three to a table, simple enough for every day and lovely enough to have lasted this long. Sylvie would keep a small one by the stove for a pour of cream and fill a larger with a fistful of flowers.
