18th c. French Commode

Almost three centuries on, and it has kept its looks. Found in Montpellier but originally from a château in northern France, this 18th-century commode sets three deep drawers above a softly scalloped apron, raised on cabriole legs and stripped back to a pale, honeyed wood. The commode was the great new furniture form of 18th-century France, the chest that moved out of the hall and into the bedroom and the salon, built with a shaped front and curving legs in the Louis XV manner to be looked at as much as used. Sylvie would set it in a bedroom under a mirror, or in an entry where it greets you at the door, the drawers kept for whatever you would rather not see.
