This matte cream-colored botijo—a traditional Spanish water vessel—is one of our favorite vessels. Crafted from porous clay, the botijo naturally cools water through evaporation, providing refreshment even in the heat of summer. Its distinctive form, with a wide belly and dual spouts, make it a true conversation starter. Perfect to stage on top of a stack of books, or as a beautiful object displayed on your coffee table.

Please note each water jug has its own slight imperfections, but don't worry we only select our favorites.

Tucked away in a sunlit corner of an Avignon market, we stumbled upon a collection of traditional Spanish botijos, their cream-colored, matte surfaces practically glowing in the afternoon light. Among them was this striking piece—a vessel steeped in history and ingenuity. The botijo, with its porous clay body and distinctive spouts, has been a cornerstone of Spanish life for centuries, designed to keep water cool even under the blazing sun.

Originating in the Iberian Peninsula, these vessels were a testament to practical design, often found in fields where farmers worked or perched on windowsills to catch the breeze. The clay’s natural cooling properties worked wonders, and the dual spouts allowed for easy filling and drinking without spilling a drop.
