The barley-twist leg was a flourish the Spanish loved, a plain post turned into a long rope of a spiral, and this console stands on six of them. Found in Aix-en-Provence and dating to the 20th century, it is a long console with two drawers on brass drop pulls, raised on those six twisted legs and joined low by a box stretcher, restored and ready to use. The spiral came into fashion in the 1600s and never quite left the workshops of Spain and Portugal, a bit of Baroque drama carried down into plainer country pieces like this. Sylvie sets it in an entry with a lamp and a bowl for keys, or behind a sofa, long enough for a run of books and flowers.
Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
Notes from Sylvie:
Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The wood has a glossy finish with slight surface imperfections. Both compartments open smoothly, with sturdy metal handles, and the piece is solidly constructed.
