Antique One-Of-A-Kind Sylvie Favorite

Long before it held a television or a stack of mail, this held the household's grain, its lid lifted every day to scoop out flour for the bread. Found in Le Perche and dating to the 20th century, it is a long, low oak bin on four square legs, its plank top once a lid that lifted to the grain, now fixed shut and made solid for life as a console. A bin like this stood in every farmhouse kitchen, raised up off the floor to keep the grain dry and away from the mice, and worn smooth by years of hands reaching in. Sylvie runs it along the wall under a television, or by the front door for keys and mail and the books that never make it upstairs.
