19th c. Italian Shelf

Italy, 19th Century

$2,995

Antique One-Of-A-Kind Sylvie Favorite

In an Italian kitchen an open shelf like this kept everything out where it could be reached and seen, the plates and bowls and the day's small things. Found in Chartres and dating to the 19th century, it is a tall Italian rack in dark old wood, three open shelves above two little drawers, its sides cut into a scalloped edge. Open racks like this were how a kitchen showed its dishes rather than shutting them away, and the scalloped sides were the country maker's flourish, a bit of shape cut into an otherwise working piece. Sylvie stands it in a kitchen with plates lined along the shelves and a stack of bowls, the two drawers holding the odds and ends that need a home.
