Antique One-Of-A-Kind Rare

The Italians carved even their smaller tables like sculpture, and this one, out of Tuscany, has its ends worked into deep lyre-shaped scrolls. Found in Avignon and dating to the 19th century, it sets a plank top on two carved scroll ends joined by a low stretcher, long and narrow enough for a console or a desk. The form is called a fratino, the friar's table, born in the monastery refectory and pared down to just what a room needs. Sylvie uses it as a console behind a sofa or against a wall, its carved legs doing all the work in a quiet room.

Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The table has a dark stain with a beautiful gleaming finish and is very sturdy. One leg has a small chip at the toe, and the corners of the tabletop have been gently sanded down to soften the edges.
