18th c. Oak Cupboard

The two-part cupboard was the proudest piece of furniture a French household owned, the place where the linens, the dishes, and the family's best were kept and shown off behind carved doors. Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and dating to the 18th century, it stands in two parts, a cabinet set on a lower cupboard, carved in oak with urns of flowers, rosettes, and fluted columns. Those carved urns spilling with flowers were a country carver's wish for plenty, cut by hand into every door, the kind of work that turned a storage cupboard into the centerpiece of a room. Sylvie stands it against a dining room wall, the shelves inside filled with glassware and stacked linens, a piece grand enough to anchor the whole room.

Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The top and bottom are two separate stacked pieces. The shelves are lined with wood grain paper. The doors and side panels have age-related cracks, and the doors do not latch closed.
