Antique Folding Kitchen Island

France, 19th Century

$4,495

Antique Rare One-Of-A-Kind Sylvie Favorite

The grand rooms of a château got the gilding and the paintings, but the real work happened in the kitchen, and a table like this stood in the middle of it. Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and dating to the early 20th century, it came out of a working château in the Rhône-Alpes, a long work table in warm wood with a single folding leaf, two drawers, turned legs, and a low board running between them near the floor. The board was built to take the weight of the copper pots, and the leaf drops down when the table needs to sit in against a wall, opening out again when there is a crowd to feed. Sylvie stands it in the middle of a kitchen as an island, the leaf lifted for a long lunch and dropped after, the board below stacked with cookbooks and market baskets.
