When it was not in use, a table like this folded away, its top tipping up on a hinge to stand flat against the wall. Found in Le Perche and dating to the late 19th century, it is a tilt-top table, a scallop-edged oval top on a turned column and three curving legs that end in scrolled feet. The tilting top was a clever old economy, letting a table shrink against the wall in a small room and open out again when it was wanted. Sylvie sets it between two chairs with a book and a coffee, and folds it flat against the wall when the room needs its floor back.
