Antique Rare Jaw Dropper Sylvie Favorite

Every atelier lived by having everything in its place, the materials of the trade kept sorted behind glass where a hand could reach them without breaking the rhythm of the work. Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and dating to the early 20th century, it came out of just such a workshop, a tall two-part cabinet in pale wood, sliding glass doors and open shelves above a row of slant-fronted glass bins set over sliding cupboards. Fittings built into a working atelier were used hard and thrown out when the workshop closed, so a whole cabinet like this surviving with its bins and glass intact is a rare thing to find. Sylvie keeps it in the kitchen with the slanted bins full of coffee beans, sugar, and dried pasta behind their glass, and the shelves above stacked with everyday plates and bowls.

Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show subtle repairs, movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The cabinet is constructed in two parts, with the upper section resting on the lower cabinet. Most of the exterior has been sanded back to raw, unfinished wood, with traces of the original dark finish still visible. The upper cabinet retains its dark-stained interior with raw wood shelves and sliding glass doors. The lower cabinet has glass doors that lift and slide beneath the cabinet top, along with drawers and lower sliding wood doors.
