Imagine it stacked the way it once was, oranges and lemons climbing the tiers, a basket of cherries set at eye level, and strings of red peppers hung off the top where the morning light caught them. From a grocer in Biarritz on the Basque coast, dating to the 1940s and found in Avignon, it is stripped to a bleached, sandy blond, a long lower table with two drawers and two shelves below, rising into three stepped tiers on slim turned posts. The stepped shelves were the grocer's oldest trick, lifting each row of fruit above the one in front so a whole shopful of color faced the street at once. Sylvie keeps it in a kitchen displaying her pots of herbs, copper pots and all of her favorite bits and bobs.
