Behind the counter of an old apothecary, a wall of little drawers like this held the whole pharmacy, each one filled with a different dried herb, root, or powder, labeled and weighed out by hand. From Normandy, it is a rare double-sided counter, 64 drawers in all, 32 facing each way, so a shopkeeper could work it from both sides at once. A counter built to be served from both sides was made for a busy shop, and to find one whole, with every drawer and pull intact, is rarer still. The whole thing is bare, stripped wood, each drawer fitted with a heavy iron cup pull worn smooth by a hundred years of hands. Sylvie runs it down the middle of a kitchen as an island, or along a wall as a sideboard, the drawers swallowing everything a room can throw at them.
Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
Notes from Sylvie:
Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The wood has been sanded back to raw, unfinished wood. Some of the handles show wear from years of use, and a few drawers may require a little extra care when opening. There are drawers on either side of the cabinet, so the drawers are not very deep.
All items are final sale.
