19th c. French Sideboard

France, 19th Century

$1,695

Before it was a sideboard, this stood behind the counter of a butcher's shop, a heavy working table that saw a lifetime of trade. Found in Lille and dating to the 19th century, it is a low, solid piece, a thick worn top over a deep slanted drawer and a two-door cupboard below, framed by scrolled side pilasters. A shop like that ran on furniture built to be scrubbed clean day after day and to last, the deep drawer for the wrapping and the tools and the cupboard for the day's stock, made heavy enough to stand behind the counter for generations. Sylvie uses it as a sideboard in a dining room or kitchen, the cupboard for linens and the thick top for serving.
