Terre Vernissée Tureen

Country potters liked to give a plain kitchen pot a little life, painting a figure onto its side so the thing you reached for every day carried a small picture of the world outside. Found in Amiens, it is glazed earthenware the colour of cream, a round lidded pot with two little handles and a domed cover, hand-painted in dark brown with a man in a hat striding out with his stick among the trees. That quick, naïve figure is the mark of terre vernissée, the everyday glazed pottery of the French countryside, made to be used rather than shown and decorated by hand all the same.Sylvie sets it on a dresser with the lid on, a covered little pot for rings and small treasures at the end of the day, the little hunter walking on across its side.
