Antique One-Of-A-Kind Artwork

Every old village has a corner like this, a leaning house with a red roof and a green door, the kind of quiet spot a painter stops at because no one else would think to. Painted in the 20th century in a village in Belgium and found in Le Perche, it is worked in thick, textured strokes, the paint standing up off the surface in the walls and the cobbled street, signed in the lower corner. The scene is a humble one, a quiet street corner, but painted so thickly and tenderly that it becomes a place you want to step into. Sylvie leans it on a shelf among books, or hangs it in a stairwell where you catch it on the way past, a little window onto somewhere old and far away.
