Antique Coffee Table

Pulled up close to the chairs by the fire, a low table like this held the small business of the evening, the cards and the candle and the cup set down within reach. Found in Belgium and dating to the early 20th century, it is a low table in pale, stripped wood, a thick plank top over two drawers hung with iron ring pulls, standing on turned front legs braced near the floor by a stretcher. The hand-forged rings and their iron plates were the hardware of a country workshop, meant to be pulled daily and to outlast the hand that pulled them. Sylvie sets it in front of a low sofa, its drawers slid open for the things a room wants close by but out of sight.
