The top of this desk is kept plain on purpose, because everything the maker had went into the base. Found in Belgium and dating to the 19th century, it sets a simple plank top on two pairs of fluted columns rising from carved scrolled feet, joined by a turned central stretcher. That carving is Renaissance Revival, the 1800s looking back to the grand cabinetmaking of the 1500s, a whole century's nostalgia worked into a set of legs. Sylvie floats it in the middle of a room as a writing desk, or stands it against a wall as a console with a lamp and a stack of books.
Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
Notes from Sylvie:
Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The piece has been sanded back to raw, unfinished wood, with some surface stains, small chips, and minor splits in the tabletop from years of use. It has been lovingly repaired throughout the years.
