Antique One-Of-A-Kind Hard To Find

The French call a stand of open shelves like this an étagère, from étage, a floor, because it stacks its little floors one above the other. Found in Le Perche and dating to the early 19th century, it rises through three open tiers held between slender turned columns, standing on little turned feet. An étagère was made for showing things off, the tiers meant for a plant, a stack of books, a few treasures, each on its own little stage. Sylvie stands it in a bathroom stacked with towels and soaps, or in an entry with a lamp, the day's letters, and a basket for keys.
