French Oak Bench

France, 19th Century

$795

Vintage One-Of-A-Kind Wood

For generations a bench like this ran down one side of a French farmhouse table, the seat the whole family crowded onto at mealtimes, day after day for a lifetime. Found in Le Perche, it is oak, a single slab of a top so thick and heavy it takes two to lift, set on two shaped legs braced by a low stretcher. That thickness is why it is still here, cut heavy enough to take a hundred years of people sitting down hard and standing up again, the kind of bench that outlasts the farmhouse it was made for. Sylvie sets it at the foot of a bed, long and low and solid, a place to sit to pull on your shoes or lay out clothes for the morning.
