Peaches spill from a compote and grapes tumble across the cloth beside a copper jug, the kind of dark, glowing still life the old Dutch masters made and French painters never stopped loving. Found in Le Perche, it is an oil on canvas signed R. Gilbert in the lower corner, a heap of ripe fruit and a copper ewer set against a deep shadowed ground. It wears the frame it deserves, wide and gilded and carved with a running band of leaves, the gold catching the little light the painting itself keeps back. Sylvie hangs it in a kitchen, or leans it on a mantel, a dark, rich still life that makes a room feel older and grander at once.
